As modern societies become increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse, the ability to speak more than one language also becomes a central issue with important social and educational implications. In this talk, I will explore the descriptive, pedagogical, political and ontological dimensions of the term "multilingualism". My main objectives are to contribute to more informed debates about the theme and to promote a reflection on what is means to be multilingual, both in classroom environments and beyond.
